For too long, poetry has been an afterthought on the internet. A subsection of a general social network. A hashtag lost in a sea of content optimized for engagement rather than craft. We built Stanza because we believe poetry is one of humanity’s most important art forms — and it deserves a platform that treats it that way.
Why Poetry Deserves Its Own Home
Think about it: musicians have SoundCloud and Bandcamp. Visual artists have DeviantArt and Behance. Photographers have 500px. Filmmakers have Vimeo. But poets? Poets have been posting screenshots of stanzas on Instagram and threading verse on Twitter. The tools were never built for us.
Stanza changes that. Every feature on this platform was designed by asking one question: what do poets actually need?
What Makes Stanza Different
Here is what sets us apart from every other platform:
Spoken Word Is a First-Class Medium
This is not an afterthought. Stanza includes a full spoken word studio with a built-in audio recorder, real-time waveform visualization, volume metering, and playback preview. Record directly in your browser, or upload existing performances in m4a, mp3, wav, webm, ogg, aac, or flac format.
You can even add a transcript alongside your audio — typed manually or auto-generated with speech-to-text.
The Encore System: Scarcity Creates Meaning
On most platforms, a "like" is infinite and therefore meaningless. Stanza introduces three reaction types, each with a distinct purpose:
- Cheers (gold) — Unlimited. Your standard applause. "I enjoyed this."
- Encores (green) — Limited to 5 per month. Your standing ovation. "This moved me deeply." When you receive an Encore, you know someone chose to spend one of their five on your work. That carries weight no unlimited like ever could.
- Tomatoes (red) — Unlimited. A constructive nudge. "This needs work." Not hate — a signal that the craft could be stronger.
You can give BOTH a Cheer and an Encore to the same poem. They are separate reaction types. If a piece both delights you and moves you deeply, honor it with both.
Inner Circles: The Digital Literary Salon
Throughout history, poets gathered in salons, coffeehouses, and workshops to share work and push each other’s craft forward. Inner Circles bring that tradition online — private literary groups with their own members-only feed, entry controls, role-based permissions, and curated community.
Structured Critiques: Real Feedback, Not "Nice Poem!"
Go beyond simple comments with 9–10 scored dimensions including Imagery, Meter, Voice, Structure, Language, Sound, Theme, Pacing, and Emotion. Reference specific lines, stanzas, words, or audio timestamps. This is how poets actually grow.
Multiple Personas
Write confessional poetry under one name and nature poetry under another. Stanza supports up to 3 profiles per account, each with its own username, followers, and body of work.
The Stage: Your Personalized Feed
The Stage is where you discover poetry. It has four perspectives:
- For You — Algorithm-curated based on your reading habits, reactions, and preferences. Gets smarter as you use Stanza.
- Following — Chronological feed from poets you follow. No algorithmic interference.
- Trending — The community’s favorites from the last 48 hours, ranked by reaction scores.
- Explore — Everything, unfiltered. New voices, unexpected discoveries.
Community First, Always
No ads. No algorithmic rage-bait. No pressure to go viral. Stanza exists to serve poets and the literary community. Your feed is tuned to surface great poetry, not to maximize time-on-screen metrics.
We believe the best communities are built on authentic connection. The Encore system, Inner Circles, and structured critiques are all designed to foster genuine engagement between poets.
